POPSUGAR Must Have - August 2013

POPSUGAR Must Have is a lifestyles subscription box and probably one of my favorites! This is my review of the August box and my first box from Popsugar. August was also Popsugar's anniversary box, so I had high expectations!

First Look!

The Box: POPSUGAR Must Have

The Cost: $35 a month

The Products: “Must have” lifestyle items for women selected by POPSUGAR editors. Categories may include home, beauty, fitness and food.

Coupon: Use code REFER5 to save $5 off your first box!

Information Card

Second First Look!

Naturebox Granny Smith Apples - $4

I loved these and quickly devoured them within the hour. I thought this snack was a perfect nod to the upcoming fall season! POPSUGAR also included a coupon for 50% off your first box with a Naturebox subscription. I never saw the appeal before, but now I may just have to sign up!

Lulah Body Wash in Vanilla Orchid - $11.25

I love that this body wash doesn't contain parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oil or SLS/SLES. I'm always looking for new safe products to try, so this was a win for me! They also included a coupon for 20% off their products, so I'll have to try some of their other fragrances, such as Peony and Magnolia Fig.

Gorjana Open Circle Necklace -$65!

This was the item I was most looking forward to when POPSUGAR released their spoiler for their anniversary box and I love it even more in person. I wasn't expecting the length of the necklace to be as short as it was, but it's still wearable and great for layering! I've gotten many compliments while wearing it.

Here's another picture of the necklace, so you can get an idea on the length.

Lunares Apple Bowl - $45 approx (I had to guess on the price since this bowl is only sold as a part of a 7 piece set.)

I think this bowl is adorable. I love the brightness of this red and the cuteness of the apple shape. This bowl made me even more excited for the upcoming fall season. It's currently on my dresser as a tray for my stud earrings and rings.

Bentgo Stackable Bento Lunch Box - $19.99

I love bento boxes, so I'm happy to add this to my collection! Thanks to a tip I received from Jennifer @Ramblings of a Suburban Mom, I learned that there was an insert inside this box describing how you can claim a spare strap. After receiving your spare strap you have the option to review this bentgo box and receive a free box in any color of your choice! I'm going to give this a try!

Here's another look!

May Books Weekly Agenda - $20

I'm a fairly organized person, so I love planners. I love the teal chevron design on this planner. I will be sad when the day comes and I've used every last page in this book.

Inside look

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel 1.7 oz - $10

A little of this product goes a LONG way. I've been using this since I got it in my box and I still have a ton left! I will most likely purchase this in the future with the 25% off coupon included in this box!

Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse 1 oz - $9.50

I never heard of a pre-cleanser before! It's an oil consistency and I love it. I have combination skin and I feel like most cleansers over-dry my skin. This oil pre-cleanse is perfect for me. I will be purchasing more of this in the future as well!

Overall this box had an amazing value of approximately $184.74. I will use everything in the box and will most likely be using the coupons to purchase more! I hope upcoming months are just as good as the August box!

Birchbox - August 2013

Birchbox is a makeup and beauty subscription box that typically sends 5 samples each month. Four of those samples usually revolve around a central theme, while one is a "beauty extra". This month they teamed up with Ann Taylor with the theme Finishing School, which is all about the details.

The Box: Birchbox

The Cost: $10 a month

The Products: Beauty and lifestyle samples selected by the Birchbox team.

Reward Points: Birchbox has a wonderful rewards program where you get 1 point for every $1 spent in their store (even if you use your points toward a purchase!) and you get 10 points for every product you review from your monthly boxes. For every 100 points you receive, you get $10 in credit on their site. Birchbox also offers extra incentives to earn more points, by making purchases from products that were featured in the boxes that month, etc. Even if you only do the reviews, the points quickly add up!

Outer Pink Box
Box within a box! I love reusing these!
First Look!

Birchbox: Once upon a time, finishing school meant an elegant Swiss academy where a a young lady went to learn the intricacies of high society. While the concept may feel a bit outdated (truth be told, we're more likely to sign up for a night class in Photoshop), we love the idea of zeroing in on the details: from the elegance of a handwritten invitation, to the confidence-boosting power of bright red lipstick.

As proof, that finishing touches are anything but fussy, we collaborated with Ann Taylor to bring you a guide to fall's best accessory trends. Learn how to update your day, night and weekend looks without breaking the bank - and on that note, you'll also fin an exclusive shopping offer just for Birchbox members.

Guide and Coupon from Ann Taylor!

Birchbox: We don't have time to spend hours in front of our closets, and we're betting you don't either. That's why we tapped Ann Taylor for help pairing the season's most wearable trends with our favorite wardrobe staples. Just add editor-approved beauty essentials for day, night, and anytime looks that come together in a New York minute (and still get you plenty of compliments).

Ann Taylor: From lip gloss to charm bracelets, finishing touches are the key to any look. That's why we teamed up with Birchbox, our favorite place to discover the newest and best in beauty to create a miniguide to pairing this season's most wearable trends with editor-approved beauty essentials. Products plus accessories - what could be better?

My Box!

ModelCo Party Proof Lipstick - $8

What: A semi-matte lipstick that delivers both hydration and lasting pigment.

I was excited to see this in my box and the color is perfect for me! My only issue though is that

Beauty Extra Bobby Pins - $1.67

What: We designed these patterned pins to add style to summer hair with minimal effort.

These are much bigger than the bobby pins I'm used to using, but they are cute! They pull on my hair a little when removing, but not enough for me to not use them.

Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer .5 fl oz - $7

What: Oil-free lotion hydrates oily and blemish-prone skin with natural antioxidants and hyaluronic acid.

I normally use moisturizers with an SPF, so I used this at night instead. It has a different feel than most moisturizers I use. It's hard to explain. It's almost sticky without being sticky. Not my favorite product, but it was both lightweight and organic, which is what I look for in moisturizers. I've been wanting to try out the Juice Beauty line for awhile now, so this was a win for me.

Violet Oasis 100% Organic Argan Oil 4 ml - $2.66

What: Star Moraccan import that feeds skin and hair with vitamin E and essential fatty acids.

I was excited to see this product in my box since I use argan oil on my hair on a regular basis. However, a little goes a LONG way with this product. I only used a small amount of the already small sample and my hair looked extremely greasy afterwards. If I hadn't already showered, I would have taken another. It was also hard to distribute with such a small amount, so it remained concentrated on certain areas of my hair. I will be sticking to my usual argan product.

Miss Jessie's Original Rapid Recovery Treatment & Super Sweetback Treatment - $2 approx

What: Nourishing Super Sweetback promotes hair growth, and Rapid Recovery smooths damaged strands.

The sweetback treatment smelled like banana laffy taffy to me! Since I'm not a fan of banana laffy taffy, I wasn't a fan of this treatment. While both products certainly made my hair soft, I can't attest to whether long-term use promoted hair growth or smoothed damaged strands.

Overall this box had a value of $21.33 and that's not even including the points I earned for reviewing these products!

Julep Golden Mystery Box - August 2013

This box was only available for Julep Maven subscribers who didn't skip the August Garden Party collection. It was for sale during the secret store that opens on the 1st of each month. If you don't take the monthly box, then you don't have access to the store. Julep doesn't usually offer mystery boxes in their secret store, so I'm guessing it was related to their two-year anniversary which was in August!

The Box: Julep Golden Mystery Box

The Cost: $21 for a one time purchase. This box was $30 originally, but I had a code for 30% off.

The Products: $100-$200 worth of nail and beauty products from Julep

Coupon: If you want to subscribe to their monthly nail and beauty subscription, get your first box free with code FREEBOX (You only have to pay shipping!)

Reasons to Subscribe:
  •  Julep Nail Color is “4-free” and does not contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, or DBP
  • Julep donates a portion of the proceeds to organizations that support women through their Powered by Girlfriends program
  • Being a Julep Maven means you get 20% off everything in their store and free shipping (no code necessary)
  • Mavens can earn jules which can be used on future boxes or add-ons! Mavens earn 300 jules for each full-price maven box they purchase (excludes mystery boxes), 200 on their birthday, 500 on their anniversary month and 750 if they upgrade to the entire collection. You even earn jules for becoming a maven and can redeem these jules on a monthly box (2,000), the entire collection (5,500) or even on add-ons (750 for nail colors, 1200+ for beauty/special products).
  • Each month you don't skip, you get to shop the secret store on the 1st of each month!
  • Each month you don't skip, you also get entered to win the mystery maven box of goodies, which is usually revealed with the collection on the 20th of each month.

My box!

Hair Ties - $7.20 ($9 if not a Maven)

Seems kind of pricy for hair ties! Especially ones that could be easily made yourself. Either way, I'm happy to see these in my mystery box. I love the mint green and basic black colors.

Julep Everyday SPF Hand Cream SPF 30 - $12.99 on sale ($22.40/$28 originally)

It was a little disappointing to see that this was on sale at the time I received my box (and still is), but I'm always on the search for hand cream with SPF, so I was still happy to see this in my box!

Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment - $14.40 ($18 if not a Maven)

Julep: Complete nail care and make-up all in one bottle. Made with a patented Hexanal formulation, nails are restructured to a stronger, thicker, and smoother condition in just one stroke. Advanced plant stem cell complex provides anti-aging benefits, while ground-breaking oxygen technology forms a nonocclusive film on the nail, proving resistant to water penetration and improving the permeability to oxygen. Results are nails that are structurally stronger, and less prone to breakage and splitting.

I was happy to see this product too! I don't like to wear nail polish to interviews in case it chips, so this will be a perfect alternative. It is also great for those days where my nails just need a little pick me up.

I apologize for the glare!

Julep Fina (Sky Blue Silvery Metallic) - $7.99 on sale ($11.20/$14 originally)

Once again this nail color was on sale and still is. It's now apparent that Julep uses retail value for their value of their mystery boxes even when the products are on sale. This is a color that I haven't decided if I'll wear or not. If I do, it will be a winter color.

Julep Alfre (Royal Metropolitan Purple Metallic) - $11.20 ($14 if not a Maven)

This is another color that I'm not sure I'll wear. I'm just not a metallic person and if I do wear metallic, I usually go for the original shades (gold, sliver, etc.). I may end up giving away both Alfre and Fina. Maybe as a Christmas gift!

Julep January (Tomato Red Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a Maven)

Now this color is way more my style. I don't have any bright reds like this, so I'm loving this!

Julep Coco (Oxblood Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a Maven)

I was the most excited about this color! I love the shade and in fact I'm wearing it now. It's the perfect fall color and may just be my absolute favorite.

NOTE: This box also came with taffy and I'm guilty of having devoured all of it before taking pictures. :)

Overall this box had a value of $76.18 in terms of Maven and sales pricing. Clearly this is less than the promised $100-200. If you calculate in terms of retail pricing with sales pricing, the value is still less than promised at $89.98. This tells me that Julep valued this box in terms of original retail value, disregarding the fact that some of the items were on sale. The total value then comes out to $111. Personally I think Julep needs to re-approach how they value their mystery boxes. I can understand using retail pricing on mystery boxes that non-Mavens can order as well, but this box was offered to Mavens ONLY. Also, even non-mavens can order Fina and the everyday hand cream for the sales price listed, so there's no reason to consider the original retail value for this box...

Despite their false advertising, I only paid $21 for the box and received $76.18 worth of products, so it was still a good deal. I will use everything except maybe Fina and Alfre, but even those would make good gifts! I will probably grab another if they ever choose to offer a golden mystery box in the secret store again.

Julep Maven Box - August 2013

Julep Maven is a nail polish and beauty subscription box. Every month they have 5 different boxes you can choose from or you can upgrade to get the entire collection. These boxes are Classic with a Twist, Bombshell, Boho Glam, Modern Beauty and It Girl. You are able to view the products each month on the 20th and have until the 24th to make your selection or skip if you don't like any of the boxes. August was Julep's second anniversary month and my first month as a maven! Their theme this month was the Garden Party Collection. I had trouble deciding which box to get, but ended up picking Classic With A Twist with three add-on colors. The August boxes are still for sale if you missed out!

Cute Floral Box For Their Anniversary!
The box: Julep Maven

The Cost: $19.99/month with free shipping or $54.99 if you upgrade to the entire collection

The Products: Nail and beauty products. Modern Beauty contains only beauty products, It Girl contains only polish, the rest contain both.

Coupon: Get your first box free with code FREEBOX (You only have to pay shipping!)

Julep Veronica (Modern Mauve Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a maven)

I'm not in love with this color, but it looks to be a pretty shade.

Julep Sylvia (Lilac Purple Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a maven)

I didn't own any purple products, which is why I decided to go with Classic With a Twist this month. Surprising too, since purple is my favorite color and lilacs are my favorite flower. :)

Doublestep Foot Treatment and Friction Stick - $17.60 ($22 if not a maven)

This no-mess shea butter treatment nourishes and moisturizes feet, stimulates circulation, and prevents blisters.

Features & Benefits:
  • Invisible formula creates a barrier between feet and shoes to protect against blisters.
  • Shea butter provides immediate and long-lasting hydration
  • Chili pepper oil invigorates skin and stimulates circulation
  • Vitamin E nourishes rough, dry skin
  • No parabens, sulfates, or phthalates
This product was in all the boxes this month with the exception of It Girl, which is a polish only option. I don't wear a lot of heels, but mainly because I have issues with my feet swelling and getting blisters. Hopefully this product will help me out next time I have to wear a pair!

Julep Nellie (Pink Fuschia Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a maven) Add-on price $4.99

This was an add-on from the It Girl box this month. I think it's my favorite polish I own. Beautiful shade.

Julep Fiore (Espresso Brown Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a maven) Add-on price $4.99

Fiore was also an add-on from the It Girl box this month. I wasn't planning on adding on this color until Julep released why they chose the color and name Fiore. It had to do with their favorite coffee shop near their old location. I'm glad I decided to add this shade on, because it is way prettier in person and pairs lovely with Nellie. If I hadn't wanted the blister stick this month, I probably would have gone with It Girl this month. Or perhaps I should have just added on the blister stick...

Julep Francis (Celery Green Crème) - $11.20 ($14 if not a maven) Add-on price $4.99

Francis was an add-on from the Boho Glam box this month. I don't love it as much as I love Nellie or Fiore, but I don't own any green polishes, so this is a nice addition to my collection and pairs nicely with Nellie.

This was the bonus item: Forget-me-not seeds as a thank you for helping them grow over the last two years. I thought this was a cute idea and it fit their garden party theme perfectly. I'm not going to try to place a value on this.

Overall this box had a value of $73.60, which is a great deal for the $34.96 I did pay (price of box plus add-ons). Can't wait to see what products and colors Julep will offer in future boxes!

If you're curious what the other colors/products were this month, see below!

The Moisture Mask Trio was the other product in the Modern Beauty box this month along with the Doublestep Blister Treatment (shown on the left). The picture on the right shows the box of goodies the the mystery maven won this month!

Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box - July 2013

I recently jumped on the subscription box bandwagon earlier this year and now I've developed quite a collection! One of the companies I subscribe from is Fancy, which offers a total of eight subscription boxes: Verbal, P!nk, Ashton Kutcher, Tyler Florence, Fancy Food, Coco Rocha, Jennifer Love Hewitt & the original Fancy box.

I subscribe to five of these: Ashton Kutcher, Coco Rocha, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tyler Florence & the original Fancy box subscription. This is my review of the Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy box subscription.

The Box: Jennifer Love Hewitt Fancy Box

The Cost: $46.95 ($39 plus $7.95 for shipping)

The Products: Each box promises $80+ worth of products curated by Jennifer Love Hewitt for Fancy

Get 10% off your first box or any order with code FOLLOWUP10

Note: Fancy does not allow returns on boxes, but they now allow returns within 30 days for one item per box in exchange for either a $15 gift card or a random item.

Mercury Innovations Motion Armband - $25

Jennifer: I can't work out without listening to music - this motion armband helps me focus on what needs to get done.

I already received this armband in green in a previous Fancy box, so I ended up swapping this and a couple more items on the Box Love Exchange B/S/T Facebook group for the Gorjana Striped Scarf from June's POPSUGAR box! I don't have an iPhone or iPod touch, so I've been keeping the green one as a motivator to get one!

American Apparel Matte Top Coat - $6

Jennifer: Give any nail polish matte effect with this clear coat that gives even the shiniest of polishes a flat finish. It's a fun way to change up your favorite nail polish!

I usually prefer my polish to be shiny, but I have a sea salt textured polish that's a little too textured for my taste. This matte top coat is perfect for minimizing that effect. Now it's much more subtle and wearable.

    AHA Lipstick Tank - $30

Jennifer: I love a good tank top and this one happens to be one of my favorites. It is simple yet so me.

I didn't think I'd like this tank as much as I do! It's super comfy and I love the pop art type print. I've gotten many compliments when wearing it. I'll pair it with a long black cardigan and a beanie to transition into fall.

    I Heart Realism Tote - $22

Jennifer: Carry your heart on your tote and be real.

This was the other item that I wasn't sure if I was going to like or not, but I do. One can never have too many bags, especially when you move all the time like I do! (Note: I couldn't verify the price as this is a smaller, custom bag made for subscribers, so I went with Fancy's pricing.)

Flavor It Infuser Water Bottle - $16

Jennifer: Water gets boring sometimes - I use this to add flavor and fruit to these hot summer days.

I've been looking into getting a glass water bottle, so the fruit infuser is an added bonus! I just don't like the taste of water from stainless steel and I'm trying to avoid plastic, so I'm loving this glass bottle. It's also dishwasher safe and BPA free. Keep in mind though that after one wash, the cap started peeling its clear seal coat, so I've been washing that piece by hand.

Bonus Item! Ballerina Jewelry Stand - $10

Fancy: Thanks again for subscribing to Jennifer’s Fancy Box! She went out of her way this month to really curate the box for you. We are aware you also received the April Fancy Box, which has the Motion Armband too (thanks for loving all our boxes by the way!)
At Fancy, we want to make sure you’re always happy with what you receive. As a token of our appreciation, we had Jennifer select one additional item, which will be sent out to you tomorrow: the Ballerina Jewelry Stand by Kikkerland. Jennifer adores collecting jewelry, and having a place to hang it up and keep it all together is essential to any style-conscious subscriber. Plus, she loves ballet.

This was my favorite item and it was a bonus! I love the fact that Fancy is finally taking into consideration their subscribers who may subscribe to more than box and as a result end up with duplicate items. I'm not sure if it was just for the Jennifer Love Hewitt subscription, but I hope they continue to do the same for all of their subscriptions! I'm adopted and the only thing I know about my birth mother is that she was a ballerina, so this jewelry stand really hits home with me and it's a gorgeous way to display my growing jewelry collection due to subscription boxes!

The Bonus Item Shipped Separately In This Box!

    First Look Bonus Item!
Overall this box had a value of $109 with the bonus item! June's box is still my favorite, but this is a close second!

    Fancy Box - July 2013

I recently jumped on the subscription box bandwagon earlier this year and now I've developed quite a collection! One of the companies I subscribe from is Fancy, which offers a total of eight subscription boxes: Verbal, P!nk, Ashton Kutcher, Tyler Florence, Fancy Food, Coco Rocha, Jennifer Love Hewitt & the original Fancy box.

I subscribe to five of these: Ashton Kutcher, Coco Rocha, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tyler Florence & the original Fancy box subscription. This is my review of the original Fancy box subscription.

    The Box: Fancy Box

The Cost: $46.95 ($39 plus $7.95 for shipping)

The Products: Each box promises $80+ worth of products from Fancy

Get 10% off your first box or any order with code FOLLOWUP10

Note: Fancy does not allow returns on boxes, but they now allow returns within 30 days for one item per box in exchange for either a $15 gift card or a random item.

    Aqua Pouch Speaker - $20

Fancy: The newly designed Aqua Pouch Speaker allows you to use your phone in the shower without ever having to worry about water damage. You can now make phone calls in the pool and listen to music outside in the rain simply by placing your smartphone in the pouch and connecting it to the earphone jack. The Aqua Pouch is also touchscreen friendly and has an attachable foldable stand for hands-free compatibility.

I originally got this item in pink, but I exchanged with Jennifer from Ramblings of a Suburban Mom for the green pouch. I love this item and I use it to listen to my tunes in the shower everyday. With my hearing loss, I can't hear the music from a speaker outside the shower, so this pouch was the perfect solution for me. Granted I have to have the volume turned ALL the way up, but no one seems to mind as far as I know. My boyfriend listens to his music almost as loud as I do already and he has full hearing. :) The only thing I've noticed is that the on/button light flickers, which tells me water might have affected it, but it's kept my iPod completely dry and that's all that matters. I wouldn't go submerging it completely underwater though. I trust that it's water-resistant, but not necessarily waterproof.

    The Fancy Wayfarer - $30

Fancy: Be one of the first people to rock these custom made matte black Fancy Wayfarer sunglasses just in time for summer. Now wear them proudly please, since you are an official member of Team Fancy!

I didn't get the matte black pair described on the information card, but I had been looking into getting a pair of tortoise sunglasses, so I was happy to see these in my Fancy box! They are in my go-to wayfarer style too, so this is definitely a win for me.

Sophie Sparrow Shark Tooth Necklace - $40 (This is listed as $60 on Sophie Sparrow's site!)

Fancy: Sophie Sparrow's gold coated Shark Tooth Necklace is the most badass necklace on the market. The necklace will match perfectly with your summer outfits while also serving you as a reminder that Shark Week is right around the corner.

I absolutely LOVE this necklace. It may be my favorite item I've ever received from a Fancy box. It's long, gold and delicate. Everything that I usually gravitate to when buying jewelery, yet I have nothing else like it. The only thing I've noticed is that I have to put this on AFTER spraying on perfume since it causes discoloration on the necklace strand, but this is an easy fix with baking soda and hot water. I've gotten compliments every time I worn this necklace.

    Chef'n Veggichop - $20

Fancy: This hand-powered cook's tool evenly and efficiently chops fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and meats without a cutting board. A few pulls creates a coarse chop; the more you pull, the finer the texture becomes. We use it for our summer time favorites -guacamole and salsa. :)

I will use this product since I have absolutely NO knife skills. My boyfriend on the other hand is a chef and doesn't understand why we need a product like this. Well when he isn't there to cook for me, I totally need it. I have a feeling though he'll still use it for things like guacamole. It's basically a mini blender. :)

    Chef'n  Burger Machine - $15

Fancy: To make the best burgers, you need the best tools. The Burger Machine is the easiest, fastest way to make uniform burger patties for juicy, tender results. Choose one of five thickness settings, then press down and lift to reveal custom patties. If that's not perfect for your summer BBQ then we don't know what is!

I love the concept of this. Sure you could always make patties by hand, but these ensure even cooking and you can buy pound packages and freeze store individual patties for later use! Perfect for when you're only cooking for one or two people.

Overall this box had a value of $125 and I'll use everything in this box! I think this is my favorite Fancy box to date!
